Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Methoxy polyethylene glycol-epoetin beta (sold under the brand name Mircera) is a long-acting erythropoietin receptor activator (CERA) used for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in adult and pediatric patients. It is a chemically modified erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) created by covalently linking epoetin beta with a linear methoxy polyethylene glycol (PEG) molecule. This modification significantly extends its serum half-life (approximately 134 hours) compared to conventional epoetins, allowing for less frequent administration (once every two weeks or once monthly). It stimulates erythropoiesis by interacting with the erythropoietin receptor on progenitor cells in the bone marrow.
