Overview
Extendryl PEM is an oral extended-release combination drug formerly marketed by Auriga Laboratories. It consists of methscopolamine nitrate, a quaternary ammonium anticholinergic agent, and phenylephrine hydrochloride, a sympathomimetic amine. Methscopolamine nitrate acts as a muscarinic receptor antagonist, effectively reducing respiratory secretions and drying nasal passages. Phenylephrine hydrochloride serves as a decongestant by acting as a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist, which induces vasoconstriction in the nasal mucosa to reduce swelling and congestion. The drug was indicated for the symptomatic relief of nasal congestion and rhinorrhea associated with allergic rhinitis and the common cold.
