Methyl aminolevulinate + hexaminolevulinate refers to a combination or concurrent consideration of two distinct ester prodrugs of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photodiagnosis. Methyl aminolevulinate (MAL) is a methyl ester primarily utilized for the topical treatment of skin lesions such as actinic keratosis and basal cell carcinoma. Hexaminolevulinate (HAL) is a hexyl ester primarily used for the fluorescence-guided detection of bladder cancer (as Cysview/Hexvix) and investigated for cervical lesions. Both compounds act as precursors to the endogenous photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), which accumulates preferentially in neoplastic cells and induces oxidative stress upon exposure to specific wavelengths of light. While both were developed by Photocure, they are generally employed as separate therapeutic or diagnostic agents rather than a fixed-dose combination.
