Overview

Methyl salicylate + menthol is a topical combination drug used to relieve minor pain associated with arthritis, backache, muscle strains, sprains, bruises, and cramps. It acts as a topical analgesic by combining two counterirritants: menthol and methyl salicylate. Menthol produces a cooling sensation followed by vasodilation (widening of blood vessels), which can enhance the penetration of other drugs through the skin and provide an analgesic effect. Methyl salicylate is a derivative of salicylic acid that inhibits cyclooxygenase enzymes (prostaglandin G/H synthase 1 and 2), reducing prostaglandin formation locally to decrease inflammation and pain. The combined action interferes with pain signal transmission in nerves by creating sensations of warmth or coolness at the application site[1][3][4][5].
