Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Thera-Gesic is a topical analgesic cream developed and marketed by Mission Pharmacal. It is a combination product containing methyl salicylate and menthol, indicated for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains of muscles and joints associated with arthritis, simple backache, strains, and sprains. Methyl salicylate acts as a counter-irritant and a local salicylate, providing analgesic effects by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis through the inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes. Menthol acts as a counter-irritant by stimulating cold-sensitive TRPM8 receptors, producing a cooling sensation that helps distract from pain signals. The product is available over-the-counter (OTC) in various strengths and is applied directly to the skin over the affected area.
