methylcellulose (Amdipharm)

Celevac is a brand name for methylcellulose, a bulk-forming agent used to manage various gastrointestinal conditions. As a hydrophilic semi-synthetic polymer derived from cellulose, it works by absorbing water in the gastrointestinal tract, swelling to increase stool bulk and soften consistency. This mechanical action helps regulate bowel function, making it effective for both constipation and diarrhoea. It is indicated for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diverticular disease, and ulcerative colitis, and has also been used as an appetite suppressant for obesity management. In the UK, it was evaluated in the MIBS Trial for IBS but was discontinued from the market in January 2021.
