Methylene blue (5%) incorporated into a proprietary porous polymer matrix is an investigational photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatment developed by researchers at Wroclaw Medical University for the management of oral lichen planus (OLP). The treatment protocol involves the topical application of the photosensitizer-loaded matrix to oral lesions for 10 minutes, followed by activation with a diode laser at a wavelength of 650 nm. The proprietary porous polymer matrix is designed to optimize the contact time and delivery of the methylene blue photosensitizer to the oral mucosa. Upon laser irradiation, methylene blue generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that induce localized oxidative stress and therapeutic effects in erythematous or erosive OLP lesions. This formulation has been evaluated in split-mouth randomized controlled trials comparing its efficacy to standard topical corticosteroids such as clobetasol.
