Overview

methylene blue + ozone is a combination therapeutic approach investigated by Assiut University for the management of early sepsis. Methylene blue is a small molecule that acts as an inhibitor of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and soluble guanylate cyclase, helping to counteract the vasodilation and hypotension associated with septic shock by reducing the overproduction of nitric oxide and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). Ozone (O3) therapy is utilized for its potential immune-modulatory and antioxidant properties, which are thought to help regulate the inflammatory response in sepsis. This combination was evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial (NCT02910765) to assess its impact on clinical outcomes such as APACHE scores, duration of ICU stay, and mortality in adult patients with early sepsis.
