Overview

methylene blue + ropivacaine is a combination analgesic therapy consisting of the phenothiazine derivative methylene blue and the long-acting amide local anesthetic ropivacaine. Developed by the Plastic Surgery Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, this combination is primarily utilized for prolonged postoperative pain management, particularly following procedures such as hemorrhoidectomy or plastic surgery. Ropivacaine functions by reversibly blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve fibers, thereby inhibiting the conduction of pain impulses. Methylene blue is included as an adjuvant to extend the duration of analgesia, potentially through its inhibitory effects on soluble guanylate cyclase or via a mild, localized neurolytic effect on sensory nerve endings. This synergistic approach aims to provide long-lasting relief and reduce the requirement for systemic opioids during the recovery period.
