Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Methylphenidate-OROS, marketed under the brand name Concerta, is an extended-release formulation of the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant methylphenidate. It utilizes the Osmotic-controlled Release Oral delivery System (OROS) technology to provide a steady release of the medication over a 12-hour period. The system consists of an immediate-release overcoat (22% of the dose) followed by a gradual osmotic pump-driven release of the remaining 78%. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children, adolescents, and adults. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of dopamine and norepinephrine transporters, thereby increasing the synaptic concentrations of these neurotransmitters in the prefrontal cortex and basal ganglia.
