Overview

This intervention is a multi-modal treatment protocol developed by Florida International University for adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) who are at risk for substance use disorders. The protocol combines pharmacological treatment using Concerta (an extended-release formulation of methylphenidate) with behavioral interventions, including Parent Training (PT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and a Brief Early Intervention (BEI). Methylphenidate acts as a central nervous system stimulant by blocking the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine. The behavioral components aim to improve self-regulation and family dynamics to mitigate the risk of substance abuse in this vulnerable population.
