Methylprednisolone + mepacaine is a combination drug intervention consisting of the synthetic corticosteroid methylprednisolone and the local anesthetic mepacaine (a brand name for mepivacaine hydrochloride). Methylprednisolone functions as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, providing potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects to reduce tissue swelling and pain. Mepacaine acts as a local anesthetic by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, providing rapid, short-term pain relief during and immediately after the injection. This combination is typically administered via intra-articular or percutaneous injection for the management of localized inflammatory musculoskeletal conditions such as lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow). In clinical research, it is frequently employed as a standard-of-care active comparator to evaluate the efficacy of newer modalities like pulsed radiofrequency.
