Overview

This intervention is a combination of methylprednisolone acetate, a synthetic glucocorticoid, and prilocaine hydrochloride, a local anesthetic. It was utilized as a specific treatment arm in a randomized clinical trial conducted by Istanbul Training and Research Hospital for the treatment of lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow). Methylprednisolone acetate functions as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, providing potent anti-inflammatory effects and suppressing the immune response at the site of the extensor tendons. Prilocaine acts as a sodium channel blocker, providing local anesthesia to mitigate pain during the injection and in the immediate post-procedure period. The trial aimed to compare the efficacy of this corticosteroid-based injection against autologous blood injections and a combined approach for managing musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction associated with tennis elbow.
