metoclopramide + trimebutine is a combination of two prokinetic agents used to enhance gastrointestinal motility and improve surgical outcomes. Metoclopramide acts as a dopamine D2 receptor antagonist and a 5-HT4 receptor agonist, which promotes gastric emptying and increases lower esophageal sphincter tone. Trimebutine is a non-selective enkephalinergic agonist that binds to mu, delta, and kappa opioid receptors, exerting a regulatory effect on the digestive tract by stimulating or inhibiting motility depending on the baseline state. This combination was studied by Sohag University in patients undergoing emergency intestinal anastomosis to assess its efficacy in reducing postoperative ileus, anastomotic leakage, and the formation of postoperative adhesions.
