Overview

This combination therapy consists of metoprolol, a selective beta-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist (beta-blocker), and enalapril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. In the context of clinical research conducted by the University of Aarhus (specifically the RenVas trial), this regimen was evaluated as a standard antihypertensive treatment to compare its effects on renal and peripheral vascular resistance against intensive vasodilation strategies in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hypertension. Metoprolol acts by reducing cardiac output and heart rate, while enalapril inhibits the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) to promote vasodilation and reduce intraglomerular pressure. The primary therapeutic goal of this combination in CKD is to lower systemic blood pressure and slow the progression of renal function loss.
