Metoprolol + hydrochlorothiazide is a fixed-dose combination of two antihypertensive agents: the beta-blocker metoprolol (typically as the tartrate salt) and the thiazide diuretic hydrochlorothiazide. This combination is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), thereby reducing cardiovascular risk such as stroke, heart attack, or kidney failure. Metoprolol works by selectively blocking beta-1 adrenergic receptors in the heart, leading to decreased heart rate and cardiac output. Hydrochlorothiazide acts on the distal renal tubules to inhibit sodium reabsorption, increasing excretion of sodium and water, which lowers blood volume and thus blood pressure. The combination provides additive antihypertensive effects through complementary mechanisms—cardiac modulation by beta-blockade and reduction of plasma volume via diuresis[1][2][3][4][5].
