Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Metoprolol tartrate + hydrochlorothiazide** is an oral fixed-dose antihypertensive combination of metoprolol tartrate, a preferential beta-1 adrenergic receptor blocker, and hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic. Metoprolol reduces heart rate, cardiac contractility, and renin-mediated sympathetic cardiovascular effects, while hydrochlorothiazide inhibits renal sodium and chloride reabsorption to promote natriuresis and reduce plasma volume. The combination is approved for treatment of hypertension and is intended for patients whose individual component doses have already been titrated rather than for initial antihypertensive therapy. It has been marketed in the United States as Lopressor HCT.
