Overview

This antibiotic prophylaxis regimen consists of a combination of oral metronidazole, oral erythromycin, and intravenous cefoperazone. It was specifically evaluated by the State Scientific Centre of Coloproctology in the Russian Federation for its efficacy in reducing surgical site infections (SSI) in patients undergoing surgery for rectal cancer. The regimen combines the anaerobic coverage of metronidazole, the aerobic and prokinetic properties of erythromycin, and the broad-spectrum activity of cefoperazone, a third-generation cephalosporin. By administering these agents preoperatively, the protocol aims to minimize the bacterial load in the operative field and systemic circulation, thereby preventing postoperative infectious complications.
