Metronidazole + levothyroxine is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents, each with distinct mechanisms and indications. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent that works by disrupting DNA synthesis in susceptible organisms, leading to cell death. It is primarily used to treat anaerobic bacterial infections and certain protozoal infections. Levothyroxine is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4), used as hormone replacement therapy in hypothyroidism; it acts by supplementing deficient endogenous thyroid hormone, thereby normalizing metabolic activity regulated by thyroid hormones. There are no known direct pharmacokinetic or pharmacodynamic interactions between these two drugs according to major drug interaction databases[1][2]. However, anecdotal reports suggest some patients may experience altered absorption or efficacy of levothyroxine when taken concomitantly with metronidazole, though this has not been substantiated in controlled studies[3][4].
