Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ametrol-VT is a fixed-dose combination vaginal tablet containing metronidazole (100 mg) and miconazole nitrate (100 mg). Developed by Ambee Pharmaceuticals, it is approved for the local treatment of mixed vaginal infections, including bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, and vulvovaginal candidiasis. Metronidazole acts as an antibacterial and antiprotozoal agent; upon intracellular reduction in anaerobic environments, it forms reactive intermediates that bind to and disrupt microbial DNA, leading to cell death. Miconazole nitrate is an imidazole antifungal that inhibits the enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase, thereby blocking the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane. Together, these components provide broad-spectrum coverage against co-existing bacterial, protozoal, and fungal pathogens in the vaginal tract.
