Overview

This investigational combination therapy consists of metronidazole and minocycline gels, developed by Riphah International University for the treatment of chronic periodontitis, particularly in diabetic patients. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic that exerts bactericidal effects against anaerobic bacteria by disrupting DNA synthesis through the formation of reactive intermediates. Minocycline is a semisynthetic tetracycline derivative that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. The combination is administered locally into the periodontal pocket as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) to target periodontal pathogens like *Porphyromonas gingivalis* and *Prevotella intermedia*, aiming to improve clinical outcomes such as probing depth and bleeding on probing.
