Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pegtoline-O (metronidazole + ofloxacin) is a combination antimicrobial suspension developed and marketed by Libra Drugs. It is formulated for oral administration and is primarily used in pediatric care to treat mixed bacterial and protozoal infections, particularly gastrointestinal infections such as acute infectious diarrhea and dysentery. The combination delivers dual-action antimicrobial efficacy: ofloxacin, a second-generation fluoroquinolone, inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV to prevent DNA replication and transcription in susceptible aerobic bacteria; metronidazole, a nitroimidazole, is selectively reduced in anaerobic environments to form reactive nitroso radicals that bind and damage microbial DNA, leading to cell death. This synergistic combination provides broad-spectrum coverage against both aerobic and anaerobic pathogens.
