Overview

"MF59 + eTIV + H5N1" refers to an experimental tetravalent influenza vaccine candidate developed by Novartis. This formulation combines a seasonal trivalent influenza vaccine (eTIV, also known as Fluad, which contains H1N1, H3N2, and a B strain adjuvanted with MF59) with an additional monovalent H5N1 avian influenza antigen (such as A/Vietnam/1194/2004). The vaccine was evaluated in Phase II clinical trials (e.g., NCT00415051) to assess the safety and immunogenicity of providing simultaneous protection against seasonal influenza and a potential pandemic H5N1 strain in a single injection. The MF59 adjuvant, a squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion, is included to enhance the immune response and provide broader protection, particularly in older adults. Following the acquisition of Novartis's vaccine division in 2015, the development of such influenza candidates transitioned to CSL Seqirus.
