Drug intelligence / Profile preview
MF59-adjuvanted tetravalent influenza vaccine (H5N1) is an experimental vaccine candidate developed by Novartis Vaccines (now part of CSL Seqirus). It is a combination product consisting of an enhanced trivalent seasonal influenza vaccine (eTIV) and a monovalent surface antigen vaccine derived from the avian influenza A (H5N1) strain. The entire formulation is adjuvanted with MF59, a squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion designed to enhance the magnitude, breadth, and duration of the immune response by creating a local immunostimulatory environment and improving antigen presentation. This tetravalent approach was designed to provide simultaneous protection against seasonal influenza strains and a potential pandemic H5N1 strain in a single immunization series. The vaccine was evaluated in Phase II clinical trials, such as NCT00415051, where it was compared against separate administrations of seasonal and pandemic vaccines, often utilizing a placebo in specific arms to maintain the study blind.
