Micro-encapsulated hepatocytes (specifically encapsulated liver organoids or eLO) are a cell therapy developed by Renji Hospital for the treatment of liver failure. The product consists of proliferating human hepatocytes (ProliHH), which are generated through the dedifferentiation of primary human hepatocytes (PHH). These cells are encapsulated in a protective matrix to form organoids, which are then transplanted intraperitoneally. This encapsulation serves to protect the hepatocytes from the host's immune system, potentially eliminating the need for long-term immunosuppression. The therapy aims to provide essential metabolic support, detoxification, and protein synthesis to compensate for the loss of liver function in patients with chronic or acute-on-chronic liver failure.
