Overview

Midazolam + dexamethasone is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents frequently used in perioperative and palliative care settings. Midazolam is a short-acting benzodiazepine with sedative, anxiolytic, muscle relaxant, anticonvulsant, and amnesic properties. It acts primarily by enhancing the effect of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA-A receptor in the central nervous system. Dexamethasone is a potent synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects; it binds to glucocorticoid receptors to modulate gene expression and suppress pro-inflammatory pathways. The combination has been studied for prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), where both drugs contribute synergistically to reduce incidence of PONV after surgery[2][3]. However, there are significant compatibility concerns when mixing these agents for parenteral administration due to precipitation risks[4][5].
