In contrast, lormetazepam undergoes direct Phase II metabolism via glucuronidation, which is independent of the cytochrome P450 system, potentially providing more stable pharmacokinetics in ICU patients. The study, led by investigators such as Claudia Spies, found that lormetazepam was associated with lighter sedation depth and lower ICU mortality compared to midazolam.
