Overview

Mifamurtide (L-MTP-PE) is a synthetic analog of muramyl dipeptide conjugated to phosphatidylethanolamine and encapsulated in liposomes. It acts as an immunomodulator by activating macrophages to destroy tumor cells and has been developed primarily for the treatment of osteosarcoma. When combined with the oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant MF59, this formulation is used as a vaccine adjuvant to enhance both humoral and cellular immune responses. The combination has been studied in cancer immunotherapy (notably osteosarcoma) and as an adjuvant in experimental vaccines for infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis B virus. The addition of MTP-PE to MF59 increases local and systemic immune reactions compared to either component alone[1][2][3][7].
