Overview
Mineral oil + hydroxypropyl guar is a fixed-dose combination ophthalmic lubricant used for the temporary relief of burning and irritation caused by dry eye disease (DED). The formulation typically utilizes a nano-emulsion technology (often referred to as LipiTech) to address both the aqueous and lipid deficiencies of the tear film. Mineral oil acts as an emollient that restores and stabilizes the lipid layer of the tear film, thereby reducing excessive tear evaporation, which is a hallmark of evaporative dry eye. Hydroxypropyl guar (HP-Guar) is a gelling polymer that, upon contact with the ocular surface and interaction with borate ions in the formulation, creates a viscoelastic cross-linked meshwork. This meshwork provides structural support to the tear film, enhances moisture retention, and protects the corneal epithelium from friction and environmental stress. Developed by Alcon, this combination is a mainstay in over-the-counter management of multifaceted dry eye symptoms.
