Overview

ARESTIN (minocycline hydrochloride microspheres, 1 mg) is a locally applied, sustained-release antibiotic developed by OraPharma (now a subsidiary of Bausch Health) for the treatment of adult periodontitis. The product consists of minocycline hydrochloride, a tetracycline-class small molecule antibiotic, encapsulated within bioresorbable poly(glycolide-co-dl-lactide) (PGLA) microspheres. It is indicated as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) procedures for the reduction of pocket depth in patients with chronic periodontitis. Administered subgingivally by dental professionals, the microspheres provide a localized, high concentration of the antibiotic at the site of infection over an extended period. Minocycline exerts its antimicrobial activity by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis in pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia.
