Overview

A combination drug consisting of **minocycline** (a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic), **edetate/EDTA** (a calcium chelator), and **ethanol**, used as an antimicrobial catheter lock solution for the prevention and treatment of catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) caused by organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Candida spp., and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The primary **mechanism of action** is the disruption and eradication of microbial biofilms on catheter surfaces: - Minocycline inhibits bacterial protein synthesis. - EDTA chelates divalent cations, destabilizing the biofilm matrix and cell membranes. - Ethanol acts as a broad-spectrum antiseptic disrupting cellular membranes and protein structures. The combination has demonstrated potent in vitro activity against bacterial and fungal biofilms and is under late-stage clinical investigation (Phase 3) for use in catheter salvage therapy, aiming to clear infections without catheter removal[1][2][3][4][5][7][9].
