The combination of misoprostol and a Foley catheter is a dual-modality intervention used for the induction of labor in term pregnancies, particularly in cases with an unfavorable cervix (low Bishop score). Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) analog that promotes cervical ripening and stimulates uterine contractions by acting as an agonist at prostaglandin receptors. The Foley catheter serves as a mechanical dilator; when inserted into the cervix and inflated, it exerts direct pressure on the internal os, physically opening the cervical canal and stimulating the endogenous release of prostaglandins. This specific regimen has been the subject of clinical research at Zagazig University to evaluate the efficacy and safety of sequential versus concurrent administration of these two methods to optimize labor induction outcomes.
