misoprostol + lansoprazole is a combination therapy being evaluated by the Chinese University of Hong Kong for the prevention of recurrent ulcer bleeding in patients with idiopathic gastroduodenal ulcers. Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analog that provides cytoprotective effects by stimulating mucus and bicarbonate secretion and maintaining mucosal blood flow. Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that suppresses gastric acid secretion by irreversibly inhibiting the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system in gastric parietal cells. The NRT_MISO study investigates whether adding misoprostol to standard PPI therapy (lansoprazole) can further reduce the risk of recurrent bleeding, particularly by addressing potential small bowel bleeding risks associated with PPI use alone.
