Overview

Misoprostol + vasopressin is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used primarily as hemostatic adjuncts during surgical procedures such as myomectomy. Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analog that induces uterine contractions and promotes cervical ripening, while vasopressin is an endogenous antidiuretic hormone with potent vasoconstrictive properties. When used together, this combination has been shown to significantly reduce perioperative blood loss compared to either agent alone, particularly in gynecological surgeries involving fibroids[1][4]. Misoprostol acts by binding to prostaglandin E1 receptors on smooth muscle cells in the uterus, increasing contractility and reducing bleeding. Vasopressin exerts its effect by causing local vasoconstriction at the site of injection, thereby minimizing blood flow and hemorrhage risk[3][6]. This combination leverages both uterotonic and vasoconstrictive mechanisms for optimal hemostasis.
