Drug intelligence / Profile preview
MM-003 is a proprietary inhaled formulation of recombinant interferon alpha-2b (IFNα2b) being developed by MedMelior for the treatment and prophylaxis of respiratory viral infections and encephalitis. As a Type I interferon, it functions as an agonist for the interferon-alpha/beta receptor complex (IFNAR1 and IFNAR2). Binding to these receptors activates the JAK-STAT signaling pathway, leading to the induction of numerous interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) that establish an antiviral state in host cells, inhibit viral protein synthesis, and enhance the activity of the innate and adaptive immune systems. By utilizing an inhalation route, MM-003 is delivered directly to the respiratory mucosa, aiming to achieve high local therapeutic concentrations while potentially minimizing systemic exposure and associated side effects. The drug is currently in preclinical development for indications including COVID-19, influenza, MERS, and SARS.
