Overview

Modafinil + alcohol refers to the concurrent use of modafinil, a wakefulness-promoting agent, and ethanol (alcohol). Modafinil is a central nervous system stimulant primarily indicated for sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, and shift work sleep disorder. Its mechanism involves antagonism of GABAergic neurotransmission and enhancement of glutamatergic activity in the brain. Alcohol acts as a CNS depressant by enhancing GABAergic activity and inhibiting glutamate signaling. When combined, these substances have opposing effects on neurotransmitter systems—modafinil stimulates while alcohol depresses—which can result in unpredictable interactions including blackouts, increased or decreased alcohol tolerance, heightened risk of side effects (such as nausea, headache, dizziness), cardiovascular complications (chest pain or palpitations), anxiety exacerbation, impaired judgment or alertness, and potentially dangerous behavioral outcomes[1][2][3][4][5][7]. The combination is not recommended due to these risks.
