Overview

Modified Jessner's solution is a chemical peel formulation used in dermatology and cosmetic procedures for skin resurfacing. It is a milder alternative to the original Jessner's solution, replacing resorcinol with citric acid to reduce potential side effects such as allergic reactions and endocrine disruption. The typical composition includes 17% lactic acid (an alpha hydroxy acid), 17% salicylic acid (a beta hydroxy acid), and 8% citric acid, all dissolved in ethanol[1][2][3][5][6]. This combination provides both superficial exfoliation and deeper penetration into the skin layers, making it effective for treating hyperpigmentation, acne scars, melasma, fine lines, uneven skin tone, and other epidermal lesions[5][7][9]. The mechanism of action involves keratolysis (exfoliation) by breaking down intercellular bonds in the stratum corneum through both AHAs and BHAs. Modified Jessner’s peels are self-neutralizing and typically do not require timing or neutralization steps during application[8].
