Modified Ringer's Lactate is a physiologically balanced crystalloid intravenous solution manufactured by Fresenius-Kabi. It is primarily used as a volume-matched placebo control in clinical research, notably in the CREW-I trial (NCT02807727) led by the University of Cape Town. This trial investigated the potential of Intralipid 20% to mitigate ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) on cardiopulmonary bypass. As a crystalloid solution, it is composed of inorganic salts and functions to maintain fluid and electrolyte homeostasis without targeting specific biological pathways. It serves as a standard comparator in surgical and critical care settings to ensure volume matching and blinding in experimental studies.
