Overview

Moffett's solution is a compounded topical pharmaceutical preparation used in otorhinolaryngological (ENT) procedures, particularly sinonasal surgeries. It is a mixture consisting of cocaine hydrochloride (a local anesthetic), adrenaline (epinephrine, a vasoconstrictor), sodium bicarbonate (a buffering agent), and 0.9% sodium chloride (a diluent). First described by Major A.J. Moffett of the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1941, the solution is applied topically to the nasal mucosa to produce profound vasoconstriction and local anesthesia. This combination is used to reduce intraoperative blood loss and improve surgical visualization during procedures for conditions such as chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal obstruction. Clinical studies have compared its efficacy and side effect profile, such as postoperative throat pain, to other topical agents like Co-phenylcaine.
