Overview

This is a **combination nutraceutical** composed of **monacolin K** (the principal hypocholesterolemic constituent of red yeast rice; structurally identical to lovastatin, an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor) and the probiotic **Bifidobacterium longum BB536**. Monacolin K inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, reducing endogenous cholesterol synthesis, while Bifidobacterium longum BB536 (with high biliary salt hydrolase activity) may reduce cholesterol absorption in the intestine. In clinical studies of adults with moderate hypercholesterolemia and low cardiovascular risk, this combination has been shown to reduce total and LDL cholesterol, non-HDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B, without significant adverse events over 12 weeks. It is delivered as a powder and frequently marketed under the name "Lactoflorene Colesterolo". Primary indication is lipid lowering for cardiovascular risk reduction in subjects with moderate hypercholesterolemia[1][2][4].
