Monovalent avian influenza virus-like particle H5N1 + adjuvant 1 is a recombinant vaccine candidate developed by Novavax for the prevention of H5N1 avian influenza. The vaccine utilizes virus-like particle (VLP) technology, where the viral hemagglutinin (HA), neuraminidase (NA), and matrix 1 (M1) proteins are expressed to form particles that structurally resemble the A/Indonesia/05/05 (H5N1) virus but lack genetic material, rendering them non-infectious. The formulation includes Adjuvant 1, which is Novavax's proprietary saponin-based adjuvant (Matrix-M), designed to enhance the magnitude and breadth of the immune response. Clinical development has primarily focused on evaluating the safety and immunogenicity of various dose levels of the VLP antigen in combination with the adjuvant in healthy adults.
