Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A **monovalent inactivated influenza vaccine H5N1 + MF59C.1** is an egg-based, inactivated influenza vaccine formulated specifically for pandemic or prepandemic use against H5N1 avian influenza virus strains, combined with **MF59C.1** adjuvant. MF59C.1 is a proprietary oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant based on squalene which enhances immune responses, particularly by increasing antibody titers and promoting cellular immunity through stimulation of CD4 memory cells and T follicular helper cell responses[1][4]. The vaccine is intended to provide increased immunogenicity and efficacy in populations at risk from H5N1, such as during potential avian influenza pandemics, and is administered by intramuscular injection. The main developer and manufacturer of MF59-adjuvanted vaccines is Seqirus (a CSL company), inheriting from Novartis. This vaccine is not a standard seasonal influenza vaccine but is specifically designed for H5N1 pandemic preparedness, and has undergone or is undergoing clinical development for this indication. The vaccine contains chemically inactivated H5N1 influenza virus antigens, purified and combined with MF59C.1 immediately before administration.
