Overview

Montelukast + albuterol is a combination of two pharmaceutical drugs used in the management of asthma and other respiratory conditions characterized by bronchospasm. Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that works by blocking leukotriene D4 at the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor in the lungs, thereby reducing inflammation, bronchoconstriction, and mucus production. Albuterol is a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist (SABA) that acts as a bronchodilator by relaxing smooth muscle in the airways, leading to rapid relief from acute bronchospasm. This combination may be used sequentially or together for both maintenance (montelukast) and quick-relief (albuterol) therapy in asthma management[3][6][7]. There is evidence suggesting potential synergistic effects when both are used together, with montelukast possibly preventing tolerance to beta-2 agonists like albuterol[7].
