The **Moraten** strain is a live attenuated measles virus used as the measles component in several measles-containing vaccines, including as a monovalent vaccine and as a component of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) combination vaccines. Moraten was developed by further attenuation of the Edmonston B measles strain to reduce reactogenicity while maintaining immunogenicity and was licensed in the US in 1968. Its mechanism of action is to induce an immune response—both humoral and cellular—by infecting host cells with a harmless, attenuated virus, resulting in long-term protection against wild-type measles[2][4][1]. The virus replicates at a much lower level than wild-type measles, providing antigenic stimulation without causing disease. It is primarily produced by Merck and has been used globally for measles immunization, notably within MMR II vaccine[4][6].
