The I.V drug-Eslam Ayman Mohamed Shawki-postoperative pain refers to a specific multimodal analgesic regimen utilized as a control arm in clinical research led by Eslam Ayman Mohamed Shawki, specifically for managing pain following lumbar spine surgery. This regimen consists of a baseline intravenous (I.V.) morphine dose of 5 mg administered every 8 hours, supplemented by rescue I.V. morphine in 2.5 mg increments for breakthrough pain (defined as a VAS score ≥ 4). Additionally, the regimen includes scheduled oral acetaminophen at a dose of 1 gm every 6 hours. Morphine provides systemic analgesia by acting as an agonist at mu-opioid receptors in the central nervous system, while acetaminophen provides complementary non-opioid pain relief through the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
