Overview

Morphine + nalbuphine is a combination of two opioid analgesics used for pain management, particularly in postoperative settings. Morphine is a classic mu-opioid receptor agonist that provides potent analgesia by acting on the central nervous system to alter the perception and response to pain. Nalbuphine is a mixed opioid agonist-antagonist; it acts as an agonist at kappa opioid receptors and as an antagonist (or partial agonist) at mu opioid receptors. When combined, low-dose nalbuphine with morphine can reduce certain opioid-related side effects such as nausea without compromising analgesic efficacy or increasing patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) requirements. This combination may be considered for improving the quality of postoperative pain control, especially after gynecological surgery[3][4]. Nalbuphine’s antagonistic action at mu receptors can partially reverse or block some adverse effects of morphine, such as respiratory depression and pruritus, but may also precipitate withdrawal in patients dependent on opioids[4][5][8].
