Mother's own colostrum and breast milk is a naturally-derived biologic intervention being investigated as an oral immunotherapy (OIT) for preterm infants. In a clinical trial led by Al Adan Hospital Kuwait, small volumes of the infant's own mother's colostrum or breast milk are administered oropharyngeally (to the buccal cavity) to provide local immune protection and stimulate the developing immune system. This intervention aims to improve feeding behaviors and reduce the incidence of clinical complications such as late-onset sepsis and necrotizing enterocolitis in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) setting. The therapeutic effect is attributed to the high concentration of immunological factors, including secretory IgA, lactoferrin, and cytokines, which interact with oropharyngeal lymphoid tissues before full enteral feeding is established.
