Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Moxifloxacin is a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic. The specific formulation AL-15469A (branded as Moxeza) was developed by Alcon Research as an "Advanced Formulation" (AF) for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis. This formulation contains 0.5% moxifloxacin hydrochloride and is supplemented with xanthan gum, which increases the viscosity and ocular residence time of the drug. This enhancement allows for a twice-daily (BID) dosing regimen, providing a more convenient alternative to the thrice-daily (TID) dosing required by the earlier formulation, Vigamox. Moxifloxacin exerts its antibacterial effect by inhibiting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. It is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative ocular pathogens.
