Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Moxidex is an investigational fixed-dose combination otic solution developed by Alcon Research for the treatment of acute otitis externa (AOE) and acute otitis media with otorrhea in patients with tympanostomy tubes (AOMT). The formulation contains moxifloxacin, a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic, and dexamethasone, a potent synthetic glucocorticoid. Moxifloxacin exerts its antibacterial effect by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. Dexamethasone provides anti-inflammatory activity by acting as an agonist at the glucocorticoid receptor, thereby reducing the inflammation, edema, and pain associated with ear infections. Moxidex was evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials to demonstrate superior efficacy compared to its individual components and vehicle in resolving clinical signs and symptoms of otic infections.
