Moxifloxacin + metronidazole is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily for the treatment of mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacterial infections, such as intra-abdominal abscesses. Moxifloxacin is a synthetic fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, leading to inhibition of DNA replication and cell death. It has broad-spectrum activity but reduced efficacy against anaerobes. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic that generates nitroso radicals in anaerobic bacteria, disrupting nucleic acid synthesis and leading to cell death; it is highly effective against anaerobic pathogens. The combination leverages the strengths of both drugs to provide comprehensive coverage for polymicrobial infections where both aerobic and anaerobic organisms are present[4][5]. This regimen has been studied in clinical settings for conditions like intra-abdominal infections and refractory hidradenitis suppurativa[2][8].
